Noe Aoki has chosen iron as her material. While her sculptures often exceed 2 metres in height, together with the surrounding space and light they seem to sway freely, defying gravity as they do so. In order to cut thin strips from large iron plates, Aoki melts and welds the iron to make sculptures that overflow with softness and warmth.
In 1997 Aoki made a series of etchings at Edition Works entitled Kumogaki andKameike-Hasuike (Turtle Pond, Lotus Pond). Then in 1998 she made the mezzotint seriesSuikan (Water Crown). 1999 brought more colourful works with the woodblock seriesKusudama .
In 2000 she had a major solo exhibition at Tokyo's Meguro Art Museum (23 November-12 December 2000) where she showed her new sculptures collectively entitled Kanten, as well as her etchings of the same title.
